Project Brief

DAME Build has recently completed a commercial and medical fitout at Epworth Hospital, East Melbourne. The project involved updating a tired and outdated suite into a more inviting and functional space for expectant mothers and their families.

Client Brief

The client requested to renovate her consulting office, which had previously felt cold, dated, and lacking in warmth. The goal was to create a setting that better supported her patients’ experience while improving day-to-day functionality. She also requested visitor seating that would provide comfort within a compact footprint, while adding subtle design elements to enhance he atmosphere of the space.

Before

Design Stage

The design approach was centred on warmth, texture, and comfort without compromising clinical functionality. Working within a compact space, priorities included replacing worn carpet tiles with durable, inviting flooring, repainting walls in a softer palette, updating the furniture to maximise storage and workspace efficiency, and integrating a new TV with additional data points.

Flooring Upgrade

The project began with the extraction of old carpet tiles and adhesive, preparing the area for a new base. Calmwalk Splendid Hybrid flooring in Natural Blackbutt was then installed across the 19-square-metre space, instantly elevating the office with its warm texture, classic herringbone design, and softer finish underfoot.

Suite Refresh

Wall surfaces were repaired and plastered before receiving fresh coats of Dulux paint in Alabaster for a warm and inviting backdrop. To enhance the look, new aluminium skirting boards were installed to neatly frame the transition between the walls and the new floor.

For the final touches, National Tiles Urban Atelier Perola Gloss Tile splashback was installed above the basin, accompanied by fresh caulking and detailing to ensure durability and polish. Above this is Otti Australia Archie black-framed mirror. These finishing touches, along with the new furniture, flooring, and television, transformed the previously dull office into a professional and inviting consulting space, ready for immediate use by the client and her patients.

Suite Fitout

Electrical works included the retention of existing data points and the installation of new ones through the ceiling to service the reconfigured office layout. A Philips 32" LED HD Google TV was wall-mounted to ensure it is integrated neatly without visual clutter. The furniture and joinery were updated to include DAME Furniture Forum Lite Desk in Laminex Seasoned Oak, paired with a DAME Furniture Black Frame Berkeley Chair as the central workstation. Storage solutions were provided through DAME Furniture Mila I Credenza and DAME Furniture Onyx Credenza, which offer both open shelving and lockable compartments for added security. Visitor seating was then completed with two DAME Furniture Snow Single Tub Chairs chosen for their compact scale and clean lines.

The Results

The completed fit-out has transformed the office into a space that is both welcoming and efficient. A softer palette, clearer organisation, and thoughtful detailing give patients a more comfortable setting, while the revised layout supports the demands of daily medical use. Despite the limited floor area, the design makes full use of the available space, resulting in a consulting room that is practical, professional, and easy to maintain.
