DAME Build has recently completed commercial and medical fitout for Women’s Ultrasound Melbourne at Epworth Hospital in 320 Victoria Parade, East Melbourne. This project was characterised by a strong emphasis on precision and a clear vision to modernise an outdated clinic, creating a clean and highly functional environment that appeals to both patients and staff.
Before
Design Stage
DAME Build design approach is to move away from the dated, darker aesthetic of the existing clinic, instead embracing a modern and clean palette. The goal was to ensure that patients, particularly new mothers-to-be, to feel safe and comfortable in a space that could otherwise feel overwhelming.
Reception Area Renovation
The reception area is the initial point of contact for patients and was designed to convey a sense of warmth and professionalism. Central to the space is DAME Furniture Roxi Reception Desk, with enhanced by integrated LED detailing. Above, Tom Dixon pendants and recessed downlights create balanced illumination, while Eclipse strip lighting provides a soft underglow.
The standout element is the feature wall, finished in a 12mm porcelain slab with the WUMe logo. This wall is the “wow factor” of the project, transforming the entrance into a modern, memorable statement that instantly elevates the clinic’s identity.
Back of House Workstation Renovation
Behind the reception, the back-of-house workstation was planned to maximise staff efficiency and create a healthier working environment. A single desk and dual desk form the core layout, complemented by custom overhead cabinetry in Classic Oak Laminex, mobile pedestal drawers, and a large pinboard to optimise usability and organisation.
LED strip lighting beneath the overhead cabinetry not only improves task lighting but also provides a calming ambience. These subtle lighting touches can transform a purely functional zone into one that feels relaxed and supportive for day-to-day work.
Scan Rooms Renovation
The three scan rooms were designed as efficient, functional spaces, each tailored to support clinical workflows while maintaining visual harmony with the overall design. Additional seating and storage were incorporated, while practical features such as shadow rails, finger-pull panels, soft-close hardware, and integrated pinboards enhance everyday usability.
New LED lighting were installed to keep the rooms bright, streamlined, and uncluttered. While the warm timber tones soften the atmosphere to avoid the sterile, cold feel of space often associated with typical medical spaces. This design choice was critical in making expectant mothers feel safe and cared for.

The medical fitout at Women’s Ultrasound Melbourne Epworth Hospital exemplifies the effective blend of functionality and design. From the reception area, which establishes a warm first impression, to the scan rooms tailored for efficiency and precision, each space contributes to both patient comfort and staff workflow. The outcome reflects DAME Build’s ability to deliver healthcare environments that are not only operationally effective but also reassuring in character.
